This is an exceedingly scarce antique 1st first edition hardcover book by the well-known author George Eliot entitled "Essays and Leaves from a Note-Book" published in 1884 by Lothrop & Co., Boston, with gold gilt spine labeling, and 195 pages in good condition for the age.

This rare old vintage book from the late 1800s has sold in the past for over $150. The text pages are mostly bright, clean, and very readable throughout without apparent significant tears or markings, and still entirely string-bound.

Contains a collection of the famous author's essays from periodicals of the time and her private ruminations on writing and writers, with contents to include Worldliness and Other-Worldliness: The Poet Young, German Wit: Heinrich Heine, Evangelical Teaching: Dr. Cumming, The Influence of Rationalism: Lecky's History, The Natural History of German Life: Riehl, Three Months in Weimar, Address to Working Men, by Felix Holt, Birth of Tolerance, Value in Originality, Felix Qui Non Potuit, Divine Grace a Real Emanation, Story-Telling, We Make Our Own Precedents, and more.

There is a neat antique blue bookplate affixed inside the front cover that is numbered. It says "No. 30, Readers' Union Library. These books are for the use of members only... Waterbury & Emery, Lessors." There is also a small intact former owner's personal name plate inside the cover with the name "L. Anna Ballard,' who appears from the link below to have been a pioneer woman doctor who settled in Michigan.

The only damage to the book appears to be some wear and corner staining to the red and black cloth hard cover, as shown, and some light edge/corner dampstaining, mostly at the very front and back of the book that do not detract, but no apparent water damage or odor.

Overall, a wonderful, extremely scarce, and valuable first edition antique book in nice condition that would be appreciated by anyone who enjoys reading or collecting old and rare books, especially the works of George Eliot.

Please buy with confidence. We have sold books and other vintage items for years on eBay with 100% positive feedback and recently made the move to eCrater due to increasing eBay fees and policy changes.
